Slow isn't a technical detail. It's a revenue number.

Most slow sites aren't slow because of the visitor's connection. They're slow because of how they were built: bloated themes, plugins nobody uses, uncompressed images, render-blocking scripts, a pile of tracking tags, slow database queries and no caching.

You rarely notice, because your own site is cached and you're on office wifi. Your visitors are on a mid-range phone on 4G, and they're gone before the page finishes loading.

Seven things that make a site slow

  1. Real-world speed. Load times and Core Web Vitals on mobile and desktop, explained in plain English.
  2. Images. Size, format, compression and lazy loading.
  3. Render-blocking code. JavaScript and CSS holding up the first paint.
  4. Third-party scripts. Analytics, chat widgets, pixels and fonts, and what each one costs you.
  5. Server and caching. Hosting response time, caching and delivery.
  6. Back-end performance. Slow queries and heavy page logic, where we can see them.
  7. Platform weight. Whether your theme, plugins or framework are the real ceiling.

Not just a Lighthouse score

Automated tools tell you the number. They don't tell you why, or what's actually worth fixing. As a developer who works across the whole stack, I'll tell you what's causing the slowdown and whether it can be fixed in place or needs a proper rebuild.

For sites where speed is costing you

This suits any UK business whose website generates enquiries, bookings or sales and feels slow, especially on mobile, or has never been properly tested for speed.

If your site is already fast, I'll say so. It's still worth knowing before you spend money on more traffic.

FAQs

Is it really free?

Yes. The audit is free and yours to keep. If you'd like help fixing what it finds, I'll quote separately, with no obligation.

Why is my website so slow?

Usually because of decisions made during the build: heavy themes, unused plugins, unoptimised images, render-blocking scripts and inefficient queries. Most slow sites aren't slow because of the connection.

Can you fix it without rebuilding the site?

Sometimes. If the cause is heavy images, inefficient code or slow queries, targeted fixes work. If the site sits on a framework or theme never designed for speed, a proper rebuild may be the only lasting fix. I'll tell you honestly which you're facing.

How much does speed affect conversions?

Google-commissioned Deloitte research ("Milliseconds Make Millions") found that a 0.1-second improvement in mobile load time lifted retail conversion rates by 8.4%. Lead generation differs from retail, but the principle is the same: slower pages lose more visitors.

Will it help my Google rankings?

Page experience, including Core Web Vitals, is one of the signals Google uses. Speed is rarely the whole story, but it's a fixable part of it.

Do you need access to my website?

No. I start with publicly available data. If we go deeper into server or database performance, I'd only do that with your say-so.

Who does the audit?

Me, Paul Helyer, founder of Murmur8, with 20+ years of building fast, conversion-focused sites. It isn't an automated report.

How long does it take?

Within 5 working days of your request.

If your site's slow, your visitors have already left.
